Problem solver Lauri Kohtamäki’s career at Cimcorp is a diverse one and covers several different roles. What keeps him hooked year after year are the Cimcorp spirit and the endless creative challenges that automation provides.

“In my opinion, automation is the perfect combination of devices and software. I’m fascinated by the magic of machines moving on their own,” says Lauri. Lauri works as a Team Leader for the automation team, overseeing smooth work in automation projects and ensuring the right people with the right skillsets are involved in creating each solution. He readily applauds his team’s talent and motivation.

We work in a diverse environment, integrating the mechanical, electrical, and software designs and bringing the machines to life.

Exciting challenges and work-life balance

Lauri’s journey as an automation pro started with automation technology studies at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. After diving into the field, Lauri received a call that paved the way for his next move. “My friend recommended I apply for the position of Automation Engineer at Cimcorp. I thought, why not – at least it would be good practice for job hunting later. Instead, I landed the job and spent the next five years traveling the world for automation projects,” Lauri reminisces.

During those years, he also met his future wife, who encouraged him to spend more time at home. A role in the R&D department, working with Monorail as well as data collection and analysis, allowed him to do that. The next crossroads came a few years later, when Lauri applied for a Team Leader position and got the job. “It was an interesting new challenge to take on.” On top of all this, while working full-time, Lauri completed his Master of Science in Technology at Tampere University’s Pori unit.

I was very privileged to work with great professionals when I first started here. I give my thanks to all colleagues who patiently guided me. I hope others will have as good conditions for learning as I did.

Fresh problems spark creativity

As an innovator, Lauri works with a ‘yes, and’ attitude. “I come up with new ideas by listening to smart people, stealing their ideas and combining them with my own solutions to fit the current problem,” he explains, tongue in cheek. Lauri is excited about the possibilities of AI, and he also sees great potential in machine vision and data. Creativity is not hard to come by when working with automation; constant learning and innovation are a must in a field that keeps developing. “We keep finding new problems that challenge us to produce more creative solutions. Seeing the results of our work inspires me. In the end, problems are solved and things get moving.”

Helping others keep up the good work

Lauri sees bright years ahead for Cimcorp. He’s pleased with the business transformation program that’s currently underway. Its objective is to develop the way Cimcorp operates as well as the structure and organization of the company offering. “There aren’t many automation companies on Cimcorp’s level on this scale. I think the development program can help us further streamline our projects and reach even better quality with less effort,” Lauri says. He wishes to help shape the future of Cimcorp by bringing development ideas into life and supporting younger experts to get to a good start with their careers.
