The series includes stories on the rapidly transforming world of logistics and the technologies shaping the way goods move across global supply chains.

Cimcorp’s story is featured through the voices of Veli-Matti Hakala, CEO, and Anne Happonen, VP Operations, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how automation, intelligent software and human innovation work together to secure the flow of essential goods around the world.

The episode explores Cimcorp’s global footprint across warehousing and distribution, tire manufacturing and EV battery production, sectors where Cimcorp has spent decades designing systems that solve the complex challenge of how to move goods quickly and safely.

“Our mission is to remove the chaos that logistics can create,” says Veli-Matti Hakala. “By combining simple mechanical principles with smart software, we help our customers secure reliability, speed and less waste.”

Hakala highlights that Cimcorp’s strength lies not in a single technology, but in the synergy of robots, gantry systems and proprietary software that adapts in real time to changing demand. Cimcorp is part of Murata Machinery Group, and this collaboration has helped the company to grow on a global level and take over bigger projects.

In the film, Anne Happonen draws a powerful parallel between nature and automation, from the balance of ecosystems to the flow of logistics. Her perspective brings humanity and emotion to a topic often seen as purely technical.

“Automation creates continuous, safe flow,” Happonen explains. “Just as nature is efficient and self-sustaining, logistics systems must operate seamlessly to meet rising capacity needs. When people and technology work together, we create resilience and reliability for the entire supply chain.”

Real-world impact for customers

The film highlights Cimcorp’s close collaboration with major global partners such as Mercadona, one of Europe’s largest grocery retailers. Cimcorp delivered modular, automated order-picking systems for fresh produce, enabling exceptional speed and accuracy and supporting Mercadona’s ambition of delivering ‘from field to store in 24 hours’.

Automation has reduced manual labor needs, improved product freshness and cut errors, benefits that directly impact consumers every day.

“Our work is about understanding customers deeply and solving the right problems,” Hakala notes.

Automation for a more resilient tomorrow

Both leaders agree that the next decade will bring rapid advancements driven by modularity, AI and data-powered decision-making. These innovations will make automation easier to understand, easier to operate, and even more closely aligned with human needs.

“Automation is collaboration of human and machine,” says Hakala. “It will help us visualize, adapt and make better decisions, from the warehouse floor to daily life.”

Cimcorp, a global pioneer in automation and intralogistics, has released a 30-minute feature documentary to commemorate its 50th anniversary year. Entitled ‘The Future of Automation’, the film captures Cimcorp’s story through the reflections of its employees, past and present.

The documentary also features comments from Erik Rosenlew – son of the company’s founder, Gustav Rosenlew – and Mirka Leino, a leading robotics academic, on the legacy of Cimcorp, and it concludes with a look forward to the future of automation. “This documentary is a tribute not only to the innovation and perseverance of Cimcorp,” says Veli-Matti Hakala, Cimcorp’s CEO, “but to the evolution of automation itself.”

From local roots to global growth

With rare archival footage, the film retraces Cimcorp’s roots to the 1970s when it began as an industrial tool factory in Pori, Finland, and charts the company’s journey to its position today as a global system integrator. From its dominance in the automation of picture tube manufacturing for the TV and computer sectors in the 1980s and 1990s, to delivering breakthrough technologies in the automotive, tire, grocery retail and lithium-ion battery industries this century, Cimcorp has pioneered the application of robotics and automation to many areas of business.

There have been challenges as well as successes over the years, but Cimcorp’s unstinting commitment to innovation has allowed the company to diversify and enter new markets. From picture tubes to paint tinting, and from ship welding to warehousing, Cimcorp has always embraced the opportunity to apply automation in new ways. This versatility has allowed the organization to break into emerging sectors and adapt to the evolving world.

Key milestones remembered

Cimcorp began life as Oy Rosenlew Ab and the ethos of going global dates back to these early days, as the company was eager to grow outside of Finland. Branching out from industrial tool production, the company sold its first commercial robot in 1975. It was this development that really marked the birth of Cimcorp, although the organization did not adopt that name until 1986, when it was acquired by Wärtsilä. “The first robots in Finland were made at Rosenlew,” says Mirka Leino, Principal Lecturer at the RoboAI Research Center at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) in Pori, in the film. “They took things forward. They played a significant role.”

Cimcorp continued its international expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, with success in the picture tube industry funding its growth. “The fact that we dared to start international manufacturing right away was really significant,” comments Kari Ollila, CEO from 1987 to 2003, in the documentary. “It taught us to be international right away.” Acquisition by Swisslog in 1996 gave Cimcorp greater resources and a broader market reach. However, dark times were just around the corner, as the development of flat-screen technology meant that the picture tube industry collapsed almost overnight. “When Cimcorp was bought, its turnover was about 40 million,” remembers Seppo Collander, Cimcorp Board Member. “A large part of that came from picture tube automation lines, and it disappeared all at once, which was a very big hit to the company.”

Cimcorp’s resilience and innovation led the company to expand its projects in both the food & beverage and tire industries. Its efforts paid dividends, particularly in tire manufacturing. “That sector really began to take off,” says Tero Peltomäki, CEO from 2021 to 2024. “Things really started to look up. The tire industry saved us completely.”

After a management buy-out in 2003, Cimcorp was a Finnish company once again, with sales in the tire industry and the warehouse & distribution sector paving the way for the successful years ahead. In 2010 Cimcorp acquired RMT Robotics to help expand its North American operations. Then in 2014 Cimcorp became a member of Murata Machinery – a large, Japanese, family-owned logistics automation business – which brought new and exciting opportunities.

Cimcorp today

Technology first developed by Cimcorp in the 1990s has proved essential to the company’s core business today. Modular robotic systems offer tire manufacturers much-needed flexibility and scalability, while automated storage & retrieval systems and order-picking robots have revolutionized warehouse operations. With proven solutions and local customer support, Cimcorp now has offices in the USA, Canada, Finland, Germany, Spain, the UK, India and Australia.

Looking ahead

The advance of technology is relentless. As Mirka Leino explains: “The automation sector is no longer seen as an industry of its own; automation is everywhere. It has been integrated into everything we do.” The documentary ends with a glance to the future, exploring the emerging technologies – such as AI – that are poised to redefine automation.

One thing that everyone agrees has been a constant in the past 50 years and will continue to be a key element in the company’s future success is the ‘Cimcorp spirit’ – the collaborative approach of colleagues to the goal of continual improvement. It is hard to define precisely but Veli-Matti Hakala, CEO, sums it up in two words: “Innovation and friendship”.

From Rosenlew roots to global innovation

The documentary retraces Cimcorp’s roots to the 1970s when it began as part of the Rosenlew Corporation, then one of Finland’s largest industrial enterprises. From those early beginnings, Cimcorp has grown into a global automation pioneer, delivering breakthrough technologies in the automotive, tire, and grocery retail industries, and innovating in areas such as lithium-ion battery automation and sustainable intralogistics.

Key milestones such as the development of CRT automation in the 1980s, the launch of the Dream Factory concept for the tire industry, and Cimcorp’s global expansion, including its integration into Murata Machinery, are brought to life through rare archival footage and personal accounts.

Mirka Leino, a principal lecturer at SAMK and a key figure at the RoboAI Research Center, shares her expertise on the integration of robotics and machine vision in modern automation. Simon Hester is eager to spread the word about Cimcorp’s unique approach to distribution center automation. His appointment as Regional Director for Australia and New Zealand marks a new level of Cimcorp’s presence in the Oceania region, making it a significant step for the entire company.

Simon describes his professional niche as ‘where civil engineering interfaces with ICT and mechatronics’, with a side of safety engineering and organizational change management. His varied career includes roles related to the rail, telecommunications, logistics, public health, and nonprofits both in Australia and the UK.

Having led two large container terminal automation projects, one as a customer and the other one as a supplier, Simon sees many analogies between moving the ‘big boxes’ and smaller ones in distribution centers.

“There are similarities in the technology, and safety and testing are paramount in both. Planning and managing the transition from the project phase to operations and maintenance is a key success factor,” Simon says.

Common direction and achievable waypoints

The business case for automation is strong

The Australian grocery trade is characterized by major supermarket chains. The benefits of automation include better employee ergonomics, less waste and higher quality produce, the business case for automation in distribution centers in the zone is attractive.

Cimcorp has a unique approach to efficient packing of pallets with a mixture of grocery products, and I look forward to sharing this story with prospective clients.

The decision to invest in automation is a big one, and the initial project is followed by more than a decade of maintenance, optimization, and changes. Establishing trust and long-term win-win partnerships is essential.

“Currently, Cimcorp has no permanent presence locally in Australia or New Zealand, and we need to show the market that we are committed to building a sustainable business in the Oceania region.”

Simon’s plans include setting up a reference site and building a mixed team of local employees, experts from HQ, and local partner organizations. He hopes to support the sales team explore opportunities with all the supermarket chains in major cities in Australia and New Zealand.

Cimcorp, a pioneer in intralogistics automation, is targeting the electric vehicle battery-manufacturing sector, as the global group continues to grow. The launch into this new market is being made in partnership with Cimcorp’s parent company, Murata Machinery Ltd., and sister company, AGVE – a leading AGV supplier, headquartered in Sweden and with operations worldwide.

Cimcorp’s robotic and automated handling technologies – which have been powering logistics within tire factories since 1991 – are being offered to EV-battery manufacturers in gigafactories across Europe, with negotiations already underway with key players in the sector.

Buffer warehouses

Cimcorp’s automation is ideal for handling the various process steps required in EV-battery production – from receipt of raw materials through electrode manufacturing, cell assembly, formation & aging and shipping.

The company can provide automated buffer warehouses between the various processes – at both ambient and high temperatures – as well as AGVs, conveyor systems and gantry robots for moving materials to and from the various process machines, including clean and dry room areas.

In the buffer warehouses, materials, components or finished cells are stored on pallets, which are handled by automatic stacker cranes operating at heights up to 40m. Each store features a Warehouse Control System to take care of the material movements, with Cimcorp also able to provide integrated execution software to ensure efficient, real-time control of all operations.

Robotic handling

Cimcorp’s robotic expertise comes into play in the formation & aging areas, which feature a large number of process steps, as finished products are charged and tested multiple times.

Here, Cimcorp’s gantry robots provide an error-free handling solution that offers unique benefits for the EV-battery industry. Operating on overhead gantries, the robots leave the floor below free of obstructions, unlike conventional rail-guided vehicles (RGVs).

This is an important advantage, enabling operators to move freely around the layout and improving access, which helps to mitigate fire risks. The intelligent robots adapt rapidly and automatically to the evolving pattern of material movements required for efficient production.

Integration and software

With considerable experience in the integration of automated systems within production environments, Cimcorp offers battery manufacturers a single point of contact for seamless delivery of intralogistics automation across multiple factory areas.

In addition, Cimcorp’s proven software links the various subsystems, not only keeping a record of all manufacturing data – ensuring traceability for raw materials, components and products – but also providing visibility for all areas at a glance.

A look back at the history of Dream Factory

We realized tire factories needed a full solution to connect and optimize machines and processes, from building to order fulfillment.

We knew tire makers needed a complete system with modular design, redundancy, and minimal space requirements. We expanded our software to connect entire processing areas, integrating our robotic systems with the tire factory’s process machinery. Here, our Dream Factory concept was born.

Driving Dream Factory’s success

2010 was a pivotal year. We delivered our first fully integrated Dream Factory solution to a major tire manufacturer in India. By 2015, Cimcorp had partnered with 14 of the top 25 tire manufacturers globally. Projects at Tigar Tyres in Serbia and Qingdao Sentury Tires in Thailand showed Dream Factory’s versatility across companies and markets.

Dream Factory’s success came from our combined expertise in automation hardware and intelligent software. Vesa Latva-Pukkila, Solution Manager, explains, “Our gantry tech and robots handle lifting, but our WCS gives the orders. The physical and digital technologies work together, making production and distribution fast and efficient.”

Dream Factory’s modular design was also to be a key advantage. It allowed manufacturers to automate incrementally, starting with high-ROI areas and expanding as needed. Dream Factory’s space-efficient, flexible design let manufacturers modernize old sites or build new plants with optimized material flow. Plus, the modular setup divided production into independent blocks to maximize uptime. If one block required maintenance, the rest of the plant could continue running smoothly.

While Cimcorp has covered many areas during its five decades, truly focusing on their chosen industries has allowed the company to dive deep into the needs and challenges of each one. This ensures the solutions and services are built with the client and their business in mind. “We have the right amount of humility to approach the client with presence and open ears. This is something we are often thanked for”, says Tero Peltomäki, CEO of Cimcorp 2021–2024.

Growth in automation requires a global market

Going global has been the only option for Cimcorp. The ethos dates all the way back to Rosenlew, who were eager to grow outside of Finland. After being acquired by Wärtsilä in 1986, Cimcorp continued to expand into international markets and diversify its product offerings.

“Our strategic starting point has always been that whatever we do with automation, the domestic market is too small. If we wish to grow, we need to pick a clear focus and take it abroad,” says former CEO Kari Ollila, who led Cimcorp from 1987 to 2007.

Since the times of Rosenlew, Cimcorp had been present in North America. Today, the company provides local services both in Canada and in USA. The forming of a German branch in 1990 enhanced the ability to serve customers across Europe, the branch was reopened after few years of break in 2021. Germany, along with Spain, remains one of Cimcorp’s European home locations. The India office was established in 2019, and the next expansion will take place in the UK market.

Similarly, Cimcorp and Muratec USA each mark 50 years of automation innovation. This convergence underscores their shared legacy of excellence. Together at ProMat 2025, Muratec USA and Cimcorp NA will show how their North American partnership is changing logistics automation. Their practical, scalable solutions transform logistics into a seamless, efficient process, setting a new standard for the industry.

Cimcorp Group is making strategic moves to expand its footprint in the UK, focusing on successful project execution and service to build controlled growth in the market.

“Our primary focus is to ensure the success of our new projects in the UK,” says Jarkko Hakkarainen, Head of Operations for Cimcorp’s European region, who has recently relocated to the UK to support the expansion. “We are already in the delivery phase of a large automation system and are actively engaging in discussions with leading grocery distributors, plus some companies in other segments in the UK, such as bakeries, to explore further project opportunities.”

The growth plan also includes studying future opportunities in the tyre industry, where Cimcorp aims to enhance its competitiveness through ongoing conversations with key players.

The United Kingdom: a promising market for automation

Cimcorp’s expansion into the UK is rooted in the company’s in-depth analysis of market potential. “The UK is one of the largest potential markets for us. The automation level in logistics is still relatively low here, making it an excellent opportunity for growth,” explains Hakkarainen.

The UK market, characterized by limited supply of automated systems, high cost of manpower and stringent hygiene standards, is ready for advanced automation solutions, and Cimcorp is poised to meet these needs.

We have successfully grown into a well-known system integrator in Europe; now we’re broadening into the UK market and we are determined to showcase our abilities here too.

Enhancing Cimcorp’s global growth through UK market entry

Cimcorp’s UK expansion holds substantial value for the company’s broader business objectives. “The UK market is a new source of growth for us and brings further diversification to our business,” explains Hakkarainen.

“The presence of international companies operating here, with projects in multiple countries, is significant and we’re able to deliver work with proven value and global relevance by leveraging our expertise in high-quality solutions.”

This expansion also opens career growth opportunities and fosters cultural diversity within Cimcorp. “A new market not only enhances our recruitment appeal but also enriches our team’s cultural experiences, creating more diverse career paths for our employees,” he continues.

Building a strong team to lead Cimcorp’s UK operations

At the helm of Cimcorp’s UK expansion is Jarkko Hakkarainen, joined by Site & Maintenance Manager Craig Downing, who is leading the local site management and maintenance operations. The team is rapidly growing to support the ongoing automation project and to establish a platform for future growth, with recruitment underway for automation engineers, maintenance engineers and administrative staff.

Cimcorp’s current CEO Tero Peltomäki is retiring after a long and noteworthy career, he continues in the board of directors. Tero will pass the baton to Veli-Matti Hakala, who wants to maintain Cimcorp’s positive culture and hands-on innovation as the company grows.

With over 25 years of experience in industry and technology, Veli-Matti Hakala first joined Cimcorp in 2016 for a chance to work in an innovative and international environment. He has grown within the company from sales to management and last year he has worked as the Executive Vice President.

The objective for the upcoming years is steady but determined growth in both our company and our clientele. The foundation for this is Cimcorp’s core technology and software that function in different segments.

Nature and family are key parts

Outside of work, Hakala likes to flyfish, ski and snowboard. Time spent with family and in nature is a key part of his life. To develop himself and his skills, he follows a simple recipe. “My career has taught me that development comes from listening. Everything starts with listening, gathering information, questioning, and analyzing.”
