For many, automation software may be synonymous with programmable logic controllers. Cimcorp, pioneer of intralogistics automation, challenges this idea by developing high-level software that prioritizes its clients’ business needs. High-level software shifts the focus beyond a single device. It adapts to various environments, offers an opportunity to develop business processes and improves user experience.
“While technological advancement has blurred the lines somewhat between device-oriented PLC and high-level WCS software, for now they remain two very different things. The larger automation systems have grown, the more crucial it has become to integrate PLC and WCS,” says Jarno Honkanen, Vice President, Solutions & Technology at Cimcorp.
Integrated software – smoother experience and extensive reporting
An integrated software package enables real-time control and lends itself to combinations of automation and manual operations. “It is often the case that not everything is automated at once. The software needs to provide for situations where some processes stay manual into the future,” Honkanen says.
For the user, an integrated solution offers a smoother experience compared to separate automation software and high-level software. This is valuable, as automation is increasingly used by workers with no in-depth training in the technology. “High-level software also allows for integration with the client’s ERP without intermediate steps. Our reporting abilities extend beyond the automation itself,” Honkanen shares.
With business analytics available in addition to device-related data, automation is much more than the functions of the robot. The focus is on the client’s order structure.
Security of supply calls for reliable automation
Cimcorp’s automation is part of the global food delivery chain, which means it has a role in security of supply. This makes cybersecurity a high priority.
“Historically, automation has been able to live in its own bubble, but the situation has taken a drastic turn in recent years. Automation now faces the same threats as any other software,” Honkanen states.
The reliability of automation also grows more critical the more widespread automated factories and distribution centers become. To prevent costly downtime, Cimcorp prioritizes fast support. In-house software speeds things up, as the experts are familiar with the problems the systems might face.
Another requirement for quality support is that development is done with careful consideration instead of on a whim.
“If we wish to hold high-quality support as our number one priority, we can’t always be changing the priorities around. This approach sharpens our focus.”
Automation for sector-specific challenges
High-level thinking has been at the core of Cimcorp’s business ever since the company delivered its first automation solution for grocery distribution in 1975. The aim has always been to create integrated, turnkey systems. The solutions are designed to meet the needs of Cimcorp’s chosen client segments, the grocery industry and tire manufacturing.
The gantry robot is agile at handling large streams of items one stack at a time and thus well suited for the high volumes of both industries. The devices are versatile and there are relatively few of them, which cuts operating costs. In addition, the floor-based storage area is easy to maintain and keep clean.
“Grocery distribution needs automation that quickly adapts to changes in order structure. Tire manufacturing, on the other hand, benefits from automation that runs production lots of different sizes, including small batches that could otherwise be a challenge,” Honkanen says.
