Commitment to delivering uncompromising value
The announcement is part of a long partnership between Mercadona and Cimcorp. Cimcorp co-innovated the automated intralogistics systems with the Spanish grocery giant for four distribution centers – Zaragoza, San Isidro, Huévar, and Parc Sagunt. The deal was part of Mercadona’s strategic efforts to drive sustainable transformation in the food supply chain with intralogistics automation.

From field to store within 24 hours
‘The grocery industry is extremely competitive, as shoppers change consuming habits fast and change stores even faster. Today, stores offering the freshest, most seasonal produce win. Our job is to help industry players provide their shoppers with more quality, fresh produce in less time,’says Kari Miikkulainen, Director of Warehouse & Distribution Industry Sales at Cimcorp.
Cimcorp’s solution enables automatic handling of order picking, labeling, and allocating orders in different temperature zones, all managed by sophisticated and integrated software to streamline processes. The solution reduced all order processing lead times from 3 days to 2 days, meaning shoppers can now get their produce fresh from the local fields to Mercadona in stores within 24 hours.
Intralogistics automation keeps going
‘There are no off days with reliable solutions,’ Kari continues. ‘Our modular software is architected with unpredictability in mind. There is no room for redundancy and no place for off days in today’s hyper-evolving consumer demand. Our solution is designed to divide the work into sections controlled by one integrated management solution, resulting in all units working to meet our partner’s desired growth targets.’
Repetitive, no quality tasks are left to the robots in Cimcorp’s new food solution, which reduces costs and enhances employee productivity, and quality of work.
‘The most significant advantage is reducing errors to guarantee a better service for our stores and customers,’says Javier Blasco, Warehouse Purchasing Coordinator for Mercadona.
Through Cimcorp’s highly-automated solution, reliable and seamless store, pick and retrieve process, quality is front and center of all aspects of the material flow.
‘The order fulfillment process is automated; we trust our robots with heavy lifting. Trusting automation maximizes the center’s output capacity, increasing the quality and productivity of the staff at work. This collaborative man-robotics knowledge ensures that everything inside the four walls of the distribution centers is optimized, and no orders are ever late’ says Miikkulainen.
Growth and scalability with intralogistics automation
The future is in adapting to uncertainty and designing for growth and scalability, and that is what Cimcorp and Mercadona worked towards from day one with its modular automation design process.
‘Having modular solutions has advantages, such as all personnel knowing the installation regardless of which city it is in. Additionally, the solutions can be scaled up, and the processes standardized more efficiently,” says Blasco, continuing, “The best part has been the sturdiness of the application; we haven’t had operational surprises with real orders, and we’ve been able to provide a guaranteed service to our stores.”Javier Blasco, Warehouse Purchasing Coordinator for Mercadona
